Best tea for morning energy without jitters?

Shu pu-erh is your answer. Seriously. I made the exact same switch 2 years ago. Shu gives a dense, warm energy — the caffeine release is slower because the fermentation changes how it hits your system. You get ~60-70mg per 200ml but it feels much steadier than coffee's 100mg spike. Brew tip: rinse the leaves once with boiling water (pour off immediately), then brew 20-25 seconds with 95°C water. First 2-3 infusions will be lighter while you figure out strength.
Agreed on shu. But also consider a good Yunnan black tea (Dian Hong) as a stepping stone — it tastes closer to what your palate expects from coffee, malty and full-bodied. Great for people transitioning. The jitter problem with coffee is often from adenosine receptor overload + fast caffeine spike. Tea's L-theanine buffers that. Even black tea will feel calmer.
Don't sleep on high-roast oolongs either. Something like a charcoal-roasted Da Hong Pao has real caffeine punch and that warming 'weight' that feels satisfying in the morning. Different from shu but equally solid.
Thanks everyone! Tried shu pu-erh this morning. Bought a small sample from a local Chinese shop. Brewed with the rinse like BrewMaster said. The energy is real and I didn't get the shaky feeling at all. The taste is earthy and takes some getting used to but honestly after cup 2 it was fine. Definitely continuing.
Late to this thread but want to add: matcha also deserves a mention for morning energy. 70mg caffeine per gram, high L-theanine, and the preparation ritual itself is kind of meditative. Different experience than pu-erh but very effective for focus + energy combo.
